Friday was a busier than usual day at the Wyoming County Active Adult Center in Eaton Township. The Wyoming County Commissioners, the media, and even a barbershop quartet filed in the door around noon to join regular Center members for an important celebration. At the center of all the commotion were two petite women dressed in their finest and sporting tiaras.
It was officially the 100th birthday of Queenie Ciprich (above, left), but she shared the honor on June 10 with B.B. Colodny, who had turned 100 in April. Together, they enjoyed a meal of chicken cutlets, garlic mashed potatoes, and mixed vegetables before Center director Rachael Kiwak began the formalities to mark the occasion.
It isn’t everyday that a member at the Center hits the century mark, Kiwak (above) acknowledged. But the odds are getting better, she noted, as she read off an impressive list that she calls the “90-plus club” of regular members that are 90 years old or older, which Kiwak attributed to good living in Wyoming County.
Kiwak was followed to the podium by Luzerne/Wyoming Counties Area Agency on Aging director of senior services and executive director Mary Roselle. Julie Williams (above, right) of Rep. Karen Boback’s office led those in attendance in the singing of ‘Happy Birthday’ and was the first to make an official presentation to the ladies on behalf of Boback and the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
The county commissioners then addressed the guests of honor, Tom Henry relating some personal memories of Queenie from his childhood before reading the first of two proclamations. Ernie King followed up with a salute to B.B.
Members of the Endless Mountains Barbershop Chorus offered their own unique rendering of ‘Happy Birthday,’ as well as a medley of cheery tunes dedicated to Queenie and B.B. After some picture taking, everybody enjoyed a piece of birthday cake.
