SusqCo Ag Day Attracts Hundreds to Elk lake School

More than 700 people were estimated to have attended Ag Day at Elk Lake High School in Susquehanna County on Friday. Among them were Rep. Tina Pickett (above, center), who enjoyed some ice cream while talking with Cindy Bonavita of Meshoppen (left) and Carl Edsell of Leraysville.

Susquehanna County Ag Day was a big hit again this year, as a wide range of exhibitors and nonprofit organizations gathered at Elk Lake School on March 3. Coordinated by the Penn State Cooperative Extension, Ag Day offered educational presentations, commercial exhibits, free samples of milk, ice cream and cheese, a pie contest and auction, and lunch in the school’s cafeteria.

Members of the Royal Dairy Court, including (front, from left) Kendra Brant, Kaelyn Brant, Katelyn Farley, (back) Mary Catherine Chidester, Emory Bewley, Alivia Hughes, and Elizabeth Chidester treated Ag Day guests to free ice cream.

Among those representing 4-H at Ag Day were sisters Emily (left) and Jamie Supancik of New Milford.

Kevin Baker of the Susquehanna Beekeepers Association brought live honeybees to Ag Day and shared the importance of maintaining a health bee population.

Shelley McAndrew of the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau encouraged Ag Day attendees to register to win this giant basket of regional goodies. The winner was Roger Furman of Retta, Auburn Township.

Wesley Congdon represented the Susquehanna County Conservation District.

Sen. Gene Yaw (right) made new acquaintances at Ag Day and chatted with longtime friends like Brian Zeidner (left) and Karen Evangelisti. Se. Lisa Baker (not pictured) was also in attendance.

Granges are still a big part of rural life in Susquehanna County, and were well represented at Ag Day. Mary Ann Furman (left) of the Fairdale Grange, and Evelyn Cottrell of the Gibson Grange were among those registering people to win cook books.

Penn State Cooperative Extension associates Jeanette Vannan (left) and Renne Mosier were among the greeters at Ag Day.

Intriguing passersby with the Wheel of Misfortune were Trehab associates Marcia Borosh of Dimock (left) and Jamie Tiffany of Springville.

Hunter Hunsinger of Springville takes a shot at Nutrition Plinko, a game offered by Maternal and Family Health of Susquehanna County.

Gail Davis represented NEPA Community Health Care.

Lunch time is a highly anticipated social event at Ag Day. Preregistered guests enjoyed ham, macaroni and cheese, green beans, coleslaw, cranberry sauce, milk, a dinner roll and a piece of cake for $3.

Winners of the pie baking contest this year in the youth division were Kyle Bonavita, Austin Bonavita and Alivia Hughes. Adult winners were Celia Wagner, Peggy Walker and April Fowler. A pie baked by Susquehanna County 4-H member Allan Warner fetched the highest bid at $500 and was taken home by Charlie Clark of Kozy Kountry Farm. The total raised this year through the pie auction was $5,788.
