New Events Calendar Offers Wide Range of Activities

The Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau (EMVB) has released its third annual Calendar of Events booklet. Nearly 30 full-color pages provide details for hundreds of festivals and fairs, workshops and seminars, tournaments and exhibits, as well as for a number of ongoing events scheduled from April 2015 to March 2016.

The brochures are designed to provide visitors and residents alike with a broad picture of what activities lay ahead from spring through the following winter and serves as a companion piece to A Guide to the Endless Mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania, which was released in February.

Non-profit and community organizations from Sullivan, Susquehanna, and Wyoming Counties submit their events for publication each year. From early spring events geared toward bringing people out of hibernation from a long winter, the Calendar of Events continues through summer fairs, tractor shows, and river festivals to fall foliage events, quilting exhibits, and harvest celebrations offering demonstrations by authentic crafters and tradespersons. Area theaters and dance studios also offer live performances in parks or under the stars as the days grow longer and the nights stay warmer. Anyone planning to be in the area on Independence Day should look to the Calendar of Events for a readily accessible snapshot of fireworks displays, fireman’s carnivals, and band concerts planned in all three counties.

Options in the winter months run the gamut from holiday fairs and solstice celebrations to musical and theater events and pre-spring wine tasting.

Venues for summer activities include town parks, churches, campgrounds, schools, historic sites, and museums and are sponsored and coordinated by a wide variety of EMVB members and nonprofit groups.

It’s a great resource piece for local residents,” said EMVB Executive Director Jean Ruhf.

Nature and agriculture are celebrated throughout the year, via river paddling trips, farm festivals, a fleece to shawl demonstration, garden parties, nature hikes, produce festivals, and outdoor stage performances that begin in the afternoons and run into the evenings.

The region’s rich heritage is marked by weekend events at a number of unique historic venues. Among the highlights of this year’s brochure are numerous family-friendly and free events. Icons at the end of each listing indicate whether there is a known fee associated with the event and if sponsors provide handicap-accessibility.

EMVB collects information for the booklet each year until the middle of February and publishes the calendar in March. While it is too late to add entries to this year’s print edition, events that were not included in the printed piece can still be promoted through the visitors bureau’s website – www.EndlessMountains.org. Easy-to-follow instructions at the site guide the user through the submission process. The site is especially user-friendly for potential visitors to the area and local residents opting this year for a “staycation.” There are certainly enough activities in any given week to provide the impetus for an action-packed road trip through the charming small towns and forested peaks of the Endless Mountains.

EMVB also releases a weekly E-blast – Endless Mountains Happenings – that can be accessed at the website on Thursdays. It is emailed automatically to members and to residents and potential visitors who request it.

The back cover of the Calendar provides details for this year’s Endless Mountains Photo Contest, for which entries must be received by Sept. 30. The theme is “Postcard Perfect,” and cash prizes will be awarded for the four digital photos that best portray the essence of the Endless Mountains.

The free Calendar of Events booklet is available at the Endless Mountains Visitors Center on Route 6 just west of Tunkhannock. It can be found at area businesses and in information racks and displays throughout the three-county region. State welcome centers and participating rest areas along interstate highways also carry copies of the brochure.

Hotels use the calendar as a resource and make copies available to guests.
