Wyalusing Valley Volunteer Fire Department (top) and the Towanda Fire Department were awarded $11,514 and $13,176, respectively, through a recent round of state grants.
More than $400,000 in state funding was awarded to first responders in Bradford, Sullivan, and Susquehanna Counties this week, according to Rep. Tina Pickett. The Pennsylvania Fire Company and Volunteer Ambulance Service Grants come from revenue produced by slot gaming in Pennsylvania.
“Our fire and EMS personnel are some of our hardest-working volunteers,” Pickett stated. “Not only do they respond to fires, car crashes and other emergencies at a moment’s notice, they spend an ever-increasing amount of time raising funds in order to keep their companies operational and their communities safe. I applaud all of these organizations for applying for this funding.”
The grant program is administered by the Pennsylvania Office of Fire Commissioner within the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA). The funds are earmarked to first responder organizations for the purpose of construction or renovation of primary structures; repair or replacement of firefighting, ambulance or rescue equipment; training; or debt reduction.
Grants totaling $259,687 were allocated to companies in Bradford County, with $143,864 going to Sullivan County, and $32,134 headed to western Susquehanna County.
