The Loyalsock State Forest will host a Fall Hike again this year on Sunday, Oct. 23. This trek will feature the Matt Mertes Trail (top) and the Weitzel Hollow Trail (above), which are some of the lesser known trails in the district. While this hike is only three miles long, there are steep and rocky sections. Highlights will include a recently improved vista, rock slopes, large conifers, and scenic Weitzel Hollow.

The Matt Mertes Memorial Trail and Weitzel Hollow Trail are part of a system of trails upon Blessing Mountain. These trails offer excellent opportunities for day hikes and mountain biking when combined with the trails of neighboring Rider Park. Their proximity to Loyalsockville and Montoursville offers a great destination for locals to come to recreate, exercise, and enjoy nature. These trails pass through areas of diverse scenery, where one will find mountain spring and brooks, rock outcroppings and slopes, seas of mountain laurel, and narrow hollows.

Participants should bring water and a snack or lunch and meet at 11 am at the Weitzel Hollow Trailhead along Wallis Run Road, Lycoming County. Traveling north, it is about 2.25-miles from Rt. 973 on the left hand side of the road.
