Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live off the land? Homesteading has become a growing trend throughout the United States. Old Mill Village Museum will celebrate our country’s agrarian roots on the village grounds in New Milford on Saturday, May 18 from noon to 5 p.m.
Local homesteading families will be sharing their experiences from their travels down the homesteading road You can visit with each family throughout the day and/or participate in scheduled demonstrations throughout the village.
Demonstrations will occur every half hour with topics including beekeeping, soap making, gardening, maple syrup production, food preservation, gardening, weaving and small livestock husbandry (poultry, dairy goats, sheep).
Penn State Master Gardeners will be joining us with lectures on garden pollinators and a “make and take” tomato cage workshop.
In addition, homesteading techniques of the past will also be highlighted, showing how things have changed over the years. Come sample food prepared over an outdoor oven.
To foster homesteading, we will have complementary homesteading gifts from our local sponsors and participating families.
Homesteading Day is new to this year’s schedule of heritage-related events happening at the village. As with all Old Mill Village events, the village buildings will be open for perusing, giving guests the opportunity to see first-hand life of early settlers.
There will also be food available at the Village Canteen and souvenirs at the Village Mercantile.
