On May 17, Alex Fried of Procter & Gamble, Mehoopany, handed Kim Whipple of the Wyoming County Players, Tunkhannock, a check for $12,400. This grant will go towards the Players’ Starlite Playhouse project.

Since 2011 Ron and Kim Whipple have been working on bringing a new state of the art theater to Northeastern Pennsylvania. “This has been our biggest donation to date and has allowed us to buy new sound and lighting equipment for our project,” said Ron.

The name for the Playhouse is in honor of Kim’s parents, Marvin and Evelyn Sands who built the first drive-in theater in Northeastern Pennsylvania in 1947 – the Starlite Drive-in. The drive-in was located on what is now Weis Market.

A unique feature to the Playhouse will be the fact that guests can arrive by airplane as the Skyhaven Airport is located right next door. The Whipples will combine efforts with other local entertainment and tourism venues in encouraging out-of-town visitors to “Come for the Day, Stay.”

The Whipples have been promoting the arts and educating children in theater since 1979. Visit www.wyomingcountyplayers.com and visit the Starlite Playhouse and Wyoming County Players
