Penn State Extension Schedules Webinars for Dairy Farmers

Penn State Extension is hosting a series of free webinars where dairy producers from different Pennsylvania counties share their experience installing and raising calves with automated calf feeders and batch feeding systems.

On-Farm Experience With Calf Feeding” will be presented on Tuesday, March 8, from 11 am to 12:30 pm. John Tyson, Penn State Extension Agricultural Engineer will give suggestions for different stages of the feeding systems development in the calf batch feeding and automated feeder systems.

These webinars are designed for dairy producers who would consider batch calf feeding, and/or automated calf feeders to their farms and would like to hear other producers’ experiences.

Participants will learn about different feeding systems/brands of calf feeders used, how they retrofit or built new brans, impact of the feeding changes on calf health, growth, milk usage, labor efficiency, and system maintenance requirements.

On-Farm Experience with Milk Processing” will be presented on Wednesday, March 16, 11 am to 12:30 pm. Ginger Fenton and Sarah Cornelis, Penn State Extension Educators will provide an overview of effective planning for developing dairy farm-based value-added business.

Participants will learn different reasons for on-farm milk bottling, the legal process, dos and don’ts in developing, marketing options, and labor and time requirements.
