Submitted Article

The Loch family invites the community to their Springville, Susquehanna County, farm for some fun, education, and lots of sweet treats.

The 21st annual open house at Lochs Maple Farm will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 17 and 18, from 10 am to 5 pm.

On Saturday, visitors can indulge themselves with a delicious pancake breakfast with lots of Loch’s maple syrup, offered at the Springville Methodist Church, from 7 am to 1 pm. Retired Penn State Forester Dr. Robert Hansen will be at the Loch’s farm 10 am to 5 pm to explain the equipment used in the woods for collecting sap.

Throughout both days, the curious can take a guided tour of the sap house to get a firsthand look at how delicious, sweet maple syrup is made. Loch’s custom fiber processing mill will also be highlighted. Another attraction at the open house is an energyefficient wood pellet fired evaporator the Lochs use to make their maple syrup. It is one of the first of its kind to be used in the state.

There’s plenty more to see and experience at the open house. The whole family will enjoy demonstrations of soap making, hand spinning, and weaving, along with vendors including newcomer Storm Spoons, and maybe a few surprises. Local author Eric Buffington will be there on Saturday, and the 2018 Endless Mountains Maple Queen Taylor Warner will be making a special appearance at the event as well.

Food will be available both days, including homemade cheeses. There will be plenty of maple treats available, including maple syrup, cream, and candy, maple milkshakes and sundaes, maple hot cocoa, maple coffee, maple vinegar, and maple caramel popcorn.

There is no admission or parking charge, and all tours and demonstrations are free as well.

Loch’s Maple is located on Zebia Cokely Road, one mile off Route 29 in Springville. Just follow the signs. For more information, call 570-965-2679 or visit www.lochsmaple.com
