As part of the 2017-18 budget, four schools in the 117th Legislative District are receiving $35,000 grants to be used for expansion of computer science classes and accompanying teacher training.
“Computer literacy is no longer an optional skill for our students to consider,” Boback said. “A working knowledge is essential in nearly every line of work, and this first-ever appropriation to support the growth of computer science is necessary if Pennsylvania hopes to grow its economy and train the workers of tomorrow.”
The $8.7 million in targeted grants elevates Pennsylvania to second in the country when it comes to investments in K-12 STEM and computer science. From a teaching perspective, the grants will support teams of educators (four or more) who desire training in implementation of computer science in their classrooms.
Here is a list of school districts in Boback’s district, along with the individual schools that currently have limited to no computer science offerings:
- Dallas School District – Dallas Middle School, Dallas Elementary School, Wycallis Elementary School.
- Lake-Lehman School District – Lake-Lehman Junior-Senior High School.
- Northwest Area School District – Northwest Primary, Northwest Intermediate, Northwest Junior/Senior High School.
- Tunkhannock Area School District – Tunkhannock Area Primary Center, Tunkhannock Area Intermediate Center, Tunkhannock STEM Academy and Tunkhannock Area High School.
- Wyoming Area School District – Intermediate Center and Secondary Center.
