Cemetery Association Seeks Board Members from Private Sector

The Riverside Cemetery Association, a 501-c3 not-for-profit organization in Towanda, seeks two volunteer at-large members from the private sector to expand its all-volunteer at-large board of directors.  Desired attributes are:

  • Understanding, acceptance and support of the 5.5-acre Riverside Cemetery as a professionally curated emerging historic site with public park components;

  • Adept use of email and verbal communications;

  • Willingness and ability to “have the back” of the Cemetery, the Association and fellow board members.

Usually there are one or two in-person meetings per year (May & October), but need and information based communications and operations are ongoing.  The Riverside Cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is located within the Towanda Historic District.  However, it has not been professionally surveyed and curated until now.

Conducted by the team of Jeffrey Geiss, Sayre, and Dennis Rialland, Towanda, certified land surveyors, retired certified land surveyor Betsy McKean, Ithaca and Lake Wesauking,  Riverside Cemetery Association board member John Korfmann, Towanda, and Ground Penetrating Radar Services, Harrisburg, the Association recently completed $50,000 of interior survey services from which a master presentation map is being developed.  The map will be used to develop property signage, a directory, exhibits and collateral materials.  Public park components, including benches, are planned to allow Cemetery/historic site visitors to constructively view the exhibits and enjoy the many natural beauties and features of the property.
