To help Susquehanna County reassess the impacts of the natural gas industry, the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) will award a state grant to the county to help with its comprehensive plan, Reps. Tina Pickett (Bradford/Sullivan/Susquehanna) and Jonathan Fritz (Susquehanna/Wayne) announced on Monday.
“Over the past decade, the natural gas industry has had considerable impact here in Susquehanna County,” Pickett (below) said. “Along with the positive impact of additional jobs and economic development also came various challenges, including road damage, skyrocketing housing prices and environmental concerns. Even though drilling activity has slowed down during the past couple of years, the county is still left to address many lingering impacts and may feel those for years to come. This grant will allow the county to reassess the long-term impact of this industry and make any preparations.”
“These funds will help ensure Susquehanna County is well positioned to realize potential benefits and opportunities presented by the natural gas industry in the years to come,” Fritz (below) said.
The county’s comprehensive plan was last updated in 2003.
The $15,000 grant is provided through DCED’s Municipal Assistance Program and is designed to help local governments deliver services more efficiently and effectively and to promote growth and community improvements.
