Route 6 at Mile Hill in Tunkhannock Township was the scene of a deadly crash at approximately 5:30 am on Tuesday morning. According to a report issued by Pennsylvania State Police at Tunkhannock just before noon on Jan. 23, William Patrick Brady, 57, Tunkhannock was traveling west on Route 6 and crossed into the eastbound lane and struck a vehicle driven by Karen Sands, 60, Tunkhannock, who was traveling east.

The head-on collision resulted in the death of Sands, as recorded at the scene by the Wyoming County Coroner’s Office. Sands, who was a nurse at Geisinger Wyoming Valley, was on her way to work.

Witnesses reported heavy fog and rain at the time of the crash, and traffic backed up quickly. Traffic was detoured onto a series of roads north of the scene that parallel Route 6 from in Washington Township to Route 29 in Tunkhannock Township. Drivers of the detours reported heavy traffic and water over much of the road due to persistent rains.

A number of tractor trailers diverted onto Jane Road, subsequently blocking and forcing the closure of that relatively winding and narrow local thoroughfare. One of the vehicles involved in the crash was moved on a rollback truck to Triton Hose Company, where the investigation continued.
