Like any first-time event, the car show conducted by supporters of the Wyalusing Public Library on June 11 served as a learning experience. While organizers made and shared mental notes throughout the event last Sunday as to what they might do better next year, there was no denying that their first attempt was well-received by both car owners and fans of hot-rods, muscle cars and other unique vehicles.

Traffic on US Route 6 ground to a halt at 5th Street in Wyalusing for about 45 minutes as vehicles arrived from east and west to take part in the fundraiser. By about 2 pm, 59 cars had been registered, and spectators were beginning to cast their ballots in a number of categories.

We, the board and staff, were just overwhelmed with the turnout and support,” Library Director Cathy Brady said afterward.

As the sun climbed in the summer skies, temperatures rose toward 90, but few complained. The pallet of colors spread across the field, the use of which was donated by Tuscarora Wayne Insurance Company, was a sight to behold.

DJ Retro Rick was spinning classic “car tunes” and other golden oldies from the 1950s through the 1970s by audience request, and vendors sold a variety of wares. Pizza and hot dogs were running low by the time the event was shortened due to the heat.

Other key donors to the event included Connie’s Market, Century Farm Meats, and The Edge Fitness Center, the latter of which provided the trophies that were distributed as the car show wound down.

The People’s Choice Award went to Clint Crawford for his 1928 Model A Roadster. He also won Oldest in Show.

Coolest Modern Car went to Jeremy Friedlander for his 2004 Mustang Cobra. The award for Coolest Paint Job went to Jack Nardone for his 1929 Model A. The Muscle Car award was given to Ken Buchinski for his 1968 Chevy Nova. Randy Brigham won the Coolest Truck award for his 1949 Chevy Swindow. Librarian’s Choice was given to DJ Strahl for his 2004 Mazda Rx8.

Proceeds of just less than $1,000 will be put toward general library expenses and programs, said Brady, who estimates that between 250 and 300 people came out just to see the cars and patronize the vendors.
