A riverbank cleanup in the Sugar Run area in Bradford County on April 28 and 29 netted a large amount of trash for the relatively few people who showed up to work.

According to cleanup organizers, two other groups in the Wyalusing area had committed volunteers, but they didn’t materialize.

The cleanup proceeded nonetheless, hampered by mud and natural debris from recent spring flooding. Items retrieved included numerous tires and 33 bags of trash. Some finds it way to the river via storm runoff, of course, but much of it is carelessly left on riverbanks by those who use the waterway for recreation.

Anglers and kayakers are encouraged to take with them a plastic grocery bag in which they can take away from the river whatever trash they take in, plus whatever other garbage they may encounter that will fit in the bag.

Those interested in organizing a river cleanup can get some guidance, as well as assistance with supplies by contacting David Buck (below, left) or Katie Stockdill (right) or at 570-746-9140.
