Northern Tier Dairy Discussion Meetings Planned

Penn State Extension and the Center for Dairy Excellence will sponsor four county Dairy Discussion Meetings.

The meetings will be held:

Tioga County – January 23, 2020 – Tokishi Training Center, 124 Nypum Drive, Wellsboro, PA 16901

Bradford County – January 30, 2020 – Towanda Gun Club, 164 Gun Club Lane, Towanda, 18848

Susquehanna County – February 19, 2020 – Montrose Library, 458 High School Rd., Montrose, PA 18801

Wyoming County – February 20, 2020, Wyoming County Emergency Services Center, 3880 State Rt. 6 Suite 1, Tunkhannock, PA 18657

All meetings will be held from 11 am to 2 pm

Topics to be covered:

Using Genomics to Select Heifers at Early Age

Chad Dechow, Associate Professor of Dairy Cattle Genetics, Penn State, will cover how genomic data can be used in selecting heifer calves for sale – including selection options for heifer inventory management, the use of beef semen for dairy heifers, and older cow – shifting herd dynamics.

Economics of Rightsizing of Dairy Heifer Herds

Michal Lunak, Dairy Educator, Penn State Extension, will review costs of raising heifers, how many heifers a dairy operation need versus how many are produced. DHIA herd summary data will be used to demonstrate potential savings. 

This is a free event, pre-registration is not required, but it is appreciated at least two days prior to each event.
