Hundreds of people assembled at the Bob Massaker Sports Complex at the east end of Tunkhannock on Saturday morning to participate in or cheer on the participants of the Blue Star Moms of NEPA second annual Hero 5K.

Cold winds howled and several snow squalls moved through the area as 136 runners and walkers in a wide age range took off on Sunnyside Road and returned to the site via the Iroquois Trail. Those who took part in the event last year felt blessed by temperatures in the 30s and occasional bursts of sunshine, noting that it was in the teens during last year’s race.

Approximately 40 individuals and businesses donated raffle baskets for the event, which were given away as the race winded down. Students from Tunkhannock High School sang the national anthem and other patriotic songs.

Representatives from Equines for Freedom and Patriots Cove also participated in the fundraiser, proceeds from which will be used to cover shipping costs to send holiday cheer to military personnel serving abroad.

Alex Patton was named first place over-all winner of the event. For a complete synopsis of the race, look to a report and more photos by Pete Hardenstine in the Nov. 15 edition of the Rocket-Courier and at www.Rocket-Courier.com.
