Rep. Tina Pickett (Bradford/Sullivan/Susquehanna) encourages local residents to learn more about a fatal disease in deer that is slowly spreading around the Commonwealth at a seminar she is hosting in Sullivan County on Thursday, Sept. 20.

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) affects the brain and nervous system of infected cervids (deer, elk and moose) eventually resulting in death. Due to the popularity of hunting in Pennsylvania, many sportsmen and residents have questions about the disease, its spread and eventual impact upon free-ranging deer and the sport of hunting.

Although no cases have been reported or confirmed along the Northern Tier, the fact that CWD is within Pennsylvania means it will eventually get to our area,” Pickett said. “This disease cannot be contracted by humans or pets, but it’s always wise to be aware of its presence in our rural areas and its potential impact.

The seminar, to be led by officials from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, will begin at 7 p.m. at the Loyalsock State Forestry Building. The building is located at 6735 Route 220 in Laporte.

Those attending must register in advance by visiting www.RepPickett.com or calling her district office at (570) 265-3124.
