A presentation about the Explore Wyoming County’s Parks & Trails project will start at 11 am that morning.
The efforts of a numerous people wishing to promote outdoor recreation, green spaces, waterways, and other sites in Wyoming County will come to fruition on Saturday, June 23 when the Explore Wyoming County’s Parks & Trails brochure is released to the public after a presentation at the Dietrich Theater. The program, which will start at 11 am, is free and open to the public. Reservations are suggested by calling 570-996-1500.
Project coordinator Rick Hiduk will facilitate the presentation, which will include an overview of the project, a slide show of the many sites included in the brochure, and a special segment conducted by naturalist and author Jeff Mitchell that is focused on the treasures to be seen in State Game Land 57, which covers most of southwestern Wyoming County. Others involved with the project will be invited to share their enthusiasm about this first collaborative attempt to provide so much information in a single source.
The brochure includes a series of maps that look at Wyoming County’s outdoor recreational options from several perspectives, including types of recreation by categorically and specific areas of the county. The State Games Lands section, for example, includes reference notes by Mitchell, icons for waterfalls, vistas, bird watching, mountain biking trails, and parking areas. Bird watching has its own section of the booklet suggesting where to look for certain species of birds in the county.
In addition to the brochure, the Explore Wyoming County’s Parks & Trails project includes four planned hikes between June and the end of 2018 to highlight as many areas on the map. These will include a guided walk of Little Rocky Glen on Saturday, June 30; a visit to the Endless Mountains Nature Center on Saturday, Sept. 8; and a hike of State Game Lands 57 (below) on Saturday, Sept. 29. A fourth outing has yet to be confirmed.
Explore Wyoming County’s Parks & Trails is sponsored by the Wyoming County Cultural Center at the Dietrich Theater, the Endless Mountains Heritage Region with funding from DCNR, the Wyoming County Room Tax Fund and the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau, and the Wyoming County Commissioner and Office of Community Planning.
